CANDAT
CANDAT is Canadian nutrient analysis software that I co-developed. I'm now rebuilding it as a web application, starting with a nutrient calculator and a recipe library that are free to use today.
Opens in a new tab. Available in English and French.
What it is
CANDAT works out the nutrients in the food people eat, using the Canadian Nutrient File, the national food composition database. The original was nutrition research software. The rebuild keeps that foundation and puts it in your browser.
Available now
The Nutrient Calculator lets you search the Canadian Nutrient File, build a list of foods with quantities, and see nutrient totals next to Dietary Reference Intakes. You can export results to CSV and save and reload your session so your work isn't lost. It works in English and French.
Recipes (task 200). Explore recipes and compare their formulations in the public recipe library, in English or French. Each recipe calculates its nutrient quantities and edible-weight reports from Canadian Nutrient File data, for the whole recipe, per 100 g and per portion. Weights are calculated before cooking, and cooking losses and nutrient retention are not applied. For now I add and edit the recipes myself, so visitors can view them but not create their own. Open it from the module selector on the CANDAT homepage or the Recipes Management menu.
What's next
Recipe management, a dedicated recipe nutrient calculation, cooking and yield factors, and converting a recipe into a food are planned and appear as Planned in the app's menu.
The rebuild is early, and two tools are available today. Things the original CANDAT did for researchers, such as multi-day intake records, food-history questionnaires and export for statistical software, are candidates for later tools. I'm not promising dates. I'm also connecting CANDAT to Recipes so recipes can show their nutrition, and that work is in development.
Who it's for
University departments and researchers, dietitians, and public health teams working with Canadian food data. If that's you, I'd like to hear what you'd need from it.
